I read it. An odd 700 words longer than my extended essay... I should have wrote about video games instead!
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of a dichotomy between the pure concepts of "play" and "work" in video games is fascinating, and probably could use some academic attention. Many of the games in my experience don't even fit perfectly into that dichotomy. For example, while the rulership activities of a game like Castles II might resemble work at first, there are several moments in the game that exist only to make you feel like a medieval ruler during that historical period. The choices made during those moments are neither right nor wrong, and have unpredictable implications for the gameplay. Perhaps a second dimension could be added, with a full scale between "abstract" and "immersive".
You are very well-read in articles and current events relevant to the gaming industry, my friend. Do you have a list of sites that you visit regularly? Most of my gaming news comes from a single web comic :)
The majority of my news comes by way of the kotaku or joystiq blog sites. I just sweep up the interesting articles and try to pit them against each other in order to tease out some interesting discussion.
